We all love flowers. But there are few creatures on the planet that love beautiful blooms more than bees. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about the world’s favourite, flower-loving insects. Unfortunately, most of the talk is about how bee populations are in danger. Pesticide use, climate change and habitat destruction are all contributing to declining bee populations the world over.
This doesn’t just mean less honey. Bees are important pollinators that are essential to helping farmers grow the food we eat every day, including fruits and vegetables, oils, cocoa beans and tea and coffee.
Seeds of Appreciation for our local bees
At Divine Vines, we want to help our customers do their part to provide local bees a safe haven with our “Feed the BEES” program. Divine Vines customers will receive free packets of wildflower seeds made specially to attract bees. Show your appreciation to these amazing little creatures by sprinkling our wildflower mix in patio pots, garden beds or anywhere flowers are desired.
“Recently, more customers are asking about flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds,” says Divine Vines owner Marie Oyama. “There is a lot of concern that our bee population is dwindling due to the chemicals used to grow fruits, vegetables and flowers.”
Bees love flowers in a variety of shapes and colours. Purple, blue, white and yellow are the often preferred colours, while a variety of shapes attract different bee species with different tongue lengths. Native plants are preferred by native bees and more exotic plants attract honeybees.
The Divine Vines “Feed the BEES” free seed mix includes Lavender Hyssop, Rockcress, New England Aster, Beeplant, Lance-Leaved Coreopsis, Plains Coreopsis, Dwarf Cosmos, Chinese Forget-Me-Not, Purple Coneflower, Aspen Daisy, California Poppy, Annual Gaillardia, Globe Gilia, Tidy Tips, Sweet Alyssum, Bergamot, Forget-Me-Not, Baby Blue Eyes, Corn Poppy and Ohio Spiderwort.
We know Divine Vines customers appreciate beautiful blooms almost as much as bees do. Not only will this mix attract beneficial pollinators to your yard (you may even see some butterflies and hummingbirds stopping by to feed from your wildflower bed), it will add a variety of shapes and colours to your home garden. And many of the flowers will return year after year, providing you with a low-maintenance garden that’ll also keep the bees happy.
